Policy Paper
From Harm to Justice: A Needs-Based Assessment of Nuclear-Affected Communities in Kazakhstan
and Policy Pathways for Implementing Articles 6 and 7 of the TPNW.
Read our latest policy paper examining the ongoing humanitarian, health, environmental, and intergenerational consequences of Soviet nuclear detonations in Kazakhstan, and outlining community-informed policy pathways for nuclear justice, victim assistance, environmental remediation, and the implementation of Articles 6 and 7 of the TPNW.
We are deeply grateful to every person who contributed to this policy paper. Your support, expertise, and continued commitment to a world free of nuclear weapons have been invaluable to us and to nuclear-frontline communities from all parts of the world. This paper would not have been possible without the contributions of members of nuclear-affected communities in Kazakhstan.
Each of us carries a lived experience shaped by loss, illness, and the long shadow of nuclear legacy: experiences that continue to define everyday life in nuclear-affected regions. For decades, our communities bore the consequences of decisions made far beyond our control. Today, we continue to call for recognition, accountability, and justice.
We hope that this policy paper can serve as one of many steps towards advancing our shared goal. Thank you for your courage, for sharing your experiences, and for continuing to speak truth to power.
